My First Trek to Ghorepani Ghandruk – A Short, Beautiful Journey into the Himalayas
The Trek to Ghorepani Ghandruk is a short and scenic journey in the Annapurna region of Nepal, perfect for beginners and families. My first trek here was full of joy, local culture, and unforgettable mountain sunrises.

I always wanted to see the mountains up close, and the Trek to Ghorepani Ghandruk gave me just that. It was short, sweet, and full of life. This trek is one of the most loved short treks in Nepal. In just 5 to 10 days, it takes you through quiet forests, small villages, and beautiful mountain views. Over 30,000 trekkers walk this route every year (source: Nepal Tourism Board). For someone like me, who was trekking for the first time, it was perfect.

My Trekking Experience

The journey started from Nayapul. The fresh air, green hills, and the sound of rivers gave me a peaceful feeling. Walking through stone steps and meeting kind villagers made me feel welcome and happy. Our first stop was Tikhedhunga, where I had my first real taste of mountain life. The next day, we walked up to Ghorepani. Yes, it was tough with all those stairs, but every step was worth it.

Early morning, we hiked to Poon Hill. When the sun touched the snow-covered peaks—like Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machapuchare—I was lost in the moment. I took a deep breath and smiled. This was the view I had only seen in pictures. Now, it was right in front of me. Poon Hill (3,210 meters) is one of the best viewpoints in Nepal, and now I understand why.

From Ghorepani, we walked to Ghandruk, a beautiful Gurung village. I loved the stone houses, the kind people, and the views of the mountains. At night, local women performed a traditional dance. I joined in, laughed, and made new friends. I had never felt more alive. Ghandruk is also known for its rich culture and is home to many Gurkha soldiers.

Why This Trek is Special

This trek is not too hard. It is good for beginners, families, and anyone who wants to enjoy nature without going too far. The total trek is around 40 km and can be done in 4 to 5 days. You do not need special permits unless you are going further into the Annapurna region. The highest point is just over 3,200 meters, so altitude sickness is rare.

Quick Tips

  • Best time to go: March to May or September to November

  • Bring comfortable shoes and a warm jacket

  • Carry a water bottle and snacks

  • Take it slow, enjoy the view

  • Be kind to locals and their customs

Final Thoughts

The Trek to Ghorepani Ghandruk was my first trek, and it made me fall in love with the mountains. I didn’t need to be super fit or rich to enjoy it. I just needed a backpack, a smile, and an open heart. If you’re looking for your first Himalayan experience, this trek might be perfect for you—just like it was for me.
